That opens up bizarre and fascinating possibilities: imagine tomato vines stretching meters high with swollen, low-density fruit. Or mushrooms developing radiation-hardened skins—perfect for use in self-healing lunar shelters.

    In collaboration with Earth-based researchers from NASA’s Artemis program, we’re experimenting with Moon-ready crops, engineered microbes, and bio-materials that could help future astronauts not only survive—but thrive.

    This is more than just theory. Our project LunaGrow (read more on our Moon Research Hub) is testing real biological samples in simulated lunar environments. We’re also developing lunar greenhouses—see our concept on the Habitat Design page—that could one day feed entire Moon bases.

    In the Moon’s environment, body fluids shift upward due to the low gravity. This leads to facial swelling and can affect blood clotting. The heart must adjust to pump blood effectively, which could reduce its performance. An immediate return to Earth could place a great strain on the body.

    Sleep Problems and Biological Rhythms
    A day on the Moon lasts about 29.5 Earth days. These extremely long periods of light and darkness disrupt our natural biological rhythm. People on the Moon would face extended periods of daylight and night, which could lead to sleep disorders. The lack of a regular day-night cycle could cause fatigue and mood swings.

    Radiation
    On Earth, the atmosphere protects us from harmful cosmic radiation. On the Moon, however, this protective layer is missing. Astronauts would be exposed to higher radiation levels, increasing the risk of cancer and cellular damage. This radiation could also weaken the immune system.

    The isolation on the Moon and the monotony of the surroundings could lead to psychological strain. Constant loneliness, lack of variety, and eerie silence could cause stress, anxiety, and even depression. The mental health of lunar inhabitants would be a critical factor for long-term survival.

    The challenges of traveling to the moon

    Despite all the progress, there are still some major hurdles:

    Cost: a ticket to the moon could cost several hundred million dollars. These astronomical prices must fall significantly in order to open up the market for mass transportation.

    Safety: The moon is an extremely dangerous place. Radiation exposure and extreme temperatures are just two of the many challenges that need to be overcome. Not to mention the hard training you have to do before you can fly to the moon.

    Infrastructure: There are currently no hotels or supply stations on the moon. All the necessary resources must be brought along or created on site.

    Hard Facts

    Cost per ticket: Today, the price of a trip to the moon is around $500 million. This price could drop to around $10 million over the next few decades.

    Timeframe: First lunar missions with tourists could start from 2030. A landing on the moon could be possible by 2040.

    Safety: Several private companies and NASA are currently testing reusable rockets and technologies to make a trip to the moon safer.

    They grew cress plants in real lunar soil from the Apollo missions. The lunar dust – also known as „regolith“ – is extremely low in nutrients, but the plants still germinated.


    Challenges: The moon is not a garden

    Of course, the moon is not exactly the ideal place for a garden. Here are a few of the biggest challenges:

    • No oxygen (Sauerstoff – Wikipedia)
    • No liquid water
    • Extreme temperatures
    • Strong radiation
    • No humus, no microorganisms

    In short: the moon is hostile to life. But with high-tech greenhouses, closed ecosystems and hydroponics, we could get around these problems. And this is exactly what is currently being researched worldwide.

    NASA is already planning the first permanent stays on the moon with the Artemis program. China, Europe and private companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin are also pursuing similar goals.

    Plants play a central role in this vision. Whether in dome-shaped greenhouses, vertical farms or even in open lunar soil with specifically adapted species – the green moon is not a question of if, but when.
