On January 17, 2025, the students of the 3rd grade of the Handelsakademie (HAK) of the Bezauer Wirtschaftsschulen had the unique opportunity to experience the adventure of space through Franz Haider, Austria’s first space tourist. In a virtual lecture, Haider took the students on a fascinating journey – from the origins of his childhood dream to his plans to fly into space again.
The path to space was not an easy one. Franz Haider explained how he was able to realize his long-standing dream and gave exciting insights into the intensive preparation: “I had to take part in training in a centrifuge twice in order to simulate the extreme forces during the rocket launch.” He also reported on the continuous information events and updates on rocket development that accompanied the process over 16 years.
Haider gave a particularly impressive description of his flight into space – an experience that changed his view of our planet forever. Looking to the future, he spoke of his wish to one day travel into space with his son.
The students had the opportunity to ask their questions after the presentation. They were particularly interested in how Haider was able to realize this dream and whether he really wanted to fly into space again. His answer was clear: “Yes, but this time together with my son.”
He concluded by encouraging the students to believe in their dreams and work hard towards them: “Everything starts with a vision and the determination to make it a reality.” The inspiring talk was not only an exciting journey into space, but also a reminder that it is worth fighting for your goals – no matter how far away they may seem at first.
