Life on the Moon may sound exciting, but it comes with many challenges:
- Gravity:
The Moon has only 1/6 of Earth’s gravity. This affects muscle development, bone strength, and balance. Without regular exercise, astronauts quickly lose muscle and bone mass.
- No Atmosphere (No Air):
The Moon has no breathable air. Humans need space suits or sealed habitats with artificial oxygen supply.
- Extreme Temperatures:
Temperatures range from +127 °C during the day to -173 °C at night. The difference is huge – and without protection, survival is impossible.
- Cosmic Radiation:
Unlike Earth, the Moon lacks a magnetic field to protect from harmful space radiation. Exposure increases the risk of diseases like cancer. Thick walls or underground bases are required for shielding.
- Psychological Stress:
Isolation, confinement, artificial lighting, and a monotonous environment can severely affect mental health. Studies on the ISS and simulation missions (like Mars500) help develop countermeasures.
